The Nebraska Medicaid Program pays for covered medical services for those persons who are unable to afford to pay for medically necessary services and who meet certain eligibility requirements. Nebraska Medicaid is funded jointly by the State and federal government.

Nebraska Medicaid is available to certain low income persons including persons who are aged, blind, disabled, children, and others who meet eligibility requirements. Kids Connection is part of Nebraska Medicaid and provides medical assistance to children age 18 and younger.

To apply for medical assistance, an application must be completed and given to the Nebraska Department of Health & Human Services. http://www.hhs.state.ne.us/med/medindex.htm

Nebraska Medicaid covers many medically necessary services from health providers who participate in the Nebraska Medicaid program. Some preventive services, such as well child check-ups and childhood vaccines, are also covered.

The Nebraska Medicaid Program has received approval of a 1915(b) waiver which authorizes the operation of the Nebraska Health Connection, Nebraska’s Medicaid Managed Care Program. The waiver authorizes mental health and substance abuse services for managed care clients statewide in addition to primary care services for Children with Special Health Care Needs and the American Indian/Alaskan Native population in Douglas, Sarpy, and Lancaster Counties.

The balance of the managed care population receives primary care services under the authority of the State Plan. The Nebraska Medicaid Program also has received approval of several home and community-based waivers under section 1915(c) of the Social Security Act.

In general, you should apply for Medicaid in Nebraska if your income is low and you match one of the descriptions of the Eligibility Groups. (Even if you are not sure whether you qualify, if you or someone in your family needs health care, you should apply for Medicaid and have a qualified caseworker in your state evaluate your situation.)
